About Mount Hood Wilderness

Mount Hood Wilderness

Mount Hood Wilderness is situated in the northern Oregon Cascades and is dominated by Mount Hood, the highest point in Oregon at 11,240 feet. The area encompasses over 64,000 acres of diverse habitat, from lush forests of Douglas fir and western red cedar to alpine meadows dotted with wildflowers. Established in 1964, the wilderness is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and offers a rich history tied to Native American heritage and early European explorers. Visitors can explore an extensive trail network, including segments of the famed Pacific Crest Trail, providing opportunities for hiking, backpacking, and climbing. The glacier-cloaked summit of Mount Hood is a significant draw for climbers, presenting both challenge and reward with its panoramic views. Wildlife is abundant, with black bears, elk, and mountain goats residing in this ecological haven. Its scenic beauty and accessibility from Portland make it a popular destination for both casual and seasoned adventurers.
